Sejarah Laksamana Bentan (Megat Seri Rama)

Admiral Bentan or his real name Megat Seri Rama came from the Riau Islands and served under His Majesty Sultan Mahmud Syah II who also moved from Riau to Kota Tinggi together with him after being brought by the Treasurer Seri Maharaja Tun Habab Abdul Majid.

He was the head of the navy, and became the confidant of Sultan Mahmud Syah II to fight pirates who were disturbing the waters of the Johor River. Pengkalan Rama is the place where Admiral Bentan moored his warships, which is on the banks of Sungai Pemandi, Kampung Makam. Admiral Bentan was granted an area for his services to Sultan Mahmud Syah II, the area is now known as Kampung Kelantan.

A tragic incident occurred where Dang Anum, his heavily pregnant wife, was executed by Sultan Mahmud Syah II, her stomach slit open for eating a piece of jackfruit belonging to him without permission, even though she was craving it. The incident occurred during the absence of Admiral Bentan who was on duty fighting pirates in the waters of the Johor River.

Dang Anum was buried in the village of Kurnia belonging to Admiral Bentan. Admiral Bentan avenged his wife's death by killing Sultan Mahmud Syah II while he was riding a horse-drawn carriage while he was about to perform Friday prayers.

He was also killed in the incident after being stabbed by a keris thrown by Sultan Mahmud Syah II. Before both of them breathed their last, Sultan Mahmud Syah II swore that seven Bentan descendants would never set foot on the land of Kota Tinggi and would vomit blood if they did.

This heartbreaking event occurred in 1699 AD, Admiral Bentan was buried next to his wife's tomb in Kampung Kelantan and Sultan Mahmud Syah II was interred in the Royal Tomb, Kampung Makam.
